Drive safer this winter

drive safe this winter with lessian motors of ilkley

Often overlooked, a crucial part of driving in adverse weather conditions is to make sure your car is mechanically sound and able to function safely.

At Lessian motors we want to help you through the winter motoring months by highlighting the most common failure points on a vehicle, and the basic steps you can take to keep you and your car safe in bad weather.

Snow and ice

Preparation is key in snow and icy conditions. Remember to clear ice and snow from the windscreen, windows, lights and mirrors, by using de-icer or warm water. In addition, any snow on the roof or bonnet should be cleared. Don’t forget to ensure all your lights work and never leave your car unattended when de-frosting!

Winter tyres are a distinct advantage in snowy conditions, and also offer better performance than standard tyres throughout the winter months on cold and wet roads.

Floods and heavy rain

Visibility is key so ensure your wipers and windscreen washers function as they should. Always check your brakes once you are clear of flooded roads to ensure they work correctly, and if you do breakdown in water – do not attempt to restart the engine and try to keep doors, windows and your bonnet closed, to minimise the amount of water entering the vehicle and engine.

Historic rally victory for Lessian Motors

Saturday 26th September saw Lessian Motors of Ilkley contest round 8 of the BTRDA Rally Series, the Trackrod Forest Stages Rally.

Consisting of 45 miles of very fast and loose gravel stages set within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, Lessian Motors, joint sponsor and provider of car service & preparation, had entered their 2.0 litre Ford Escort RS2000 MkII rally car to run in the highly competitive H2 Historic rally car class, with the car being freshly rebuilt to run in the class for the very first time.

In perfect driving conditions, the rally attracted over 180 rally crews to battle it out in the prime condition gravel tracks north of the picturesque market town of Pickering. After competing over the first 4 stages of the rally, the Lessian Motors/GPM Rally Team was placed second in class, an astonishing position for the crew and car, considering it was their first time out in the H2 category, and were up against some very experienced rally crews. By the end of the last stage, the car’s driver, Graeme Powell of PR & Marketing company GPM, had clawed his way up to first in class, winning by a margin of just over 6 seconds from the second placed car.

“To be honest, I didn’t know where we’d end up in this new class, the playing field is more even in this category with cars more closely matched in handling and performance, and it was the first time we’d competed in it,” said Graeme. “This event was run at a very fast pace and was tough, we’d seen quite a few cars crash out or broken down in the stages. To not only finish the rally, but also achieve first in class was a result I’m very proud. It’s a fitting reward for all the hours that go into the meticulous preparation of the car by Lessian Motors, who also service car on events – a real reflection of their professionalism and commitment.”

A great success for Ilkley’s first Rally & Run!

Celebrating Yorkshire day and raising funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity, on Saturday 1st August, Ilkley’s Lessian Motors hosted the town’s first ever Rally and Run.

On the day, participants drove their vintage, classic, and performance cars through almost 100 miles of the Yorkshire Dales’ most remote and challenging roads – raising over £800 for charity.

Starting at 11am, participants gathered at Ilkley Rugby club to sign-on and receive their route instructions. Flagged away by Harry and George Simpson, they navigated their way to Arncliffe village, where a much needed refuel for the drivers and passengers saw traditional Yorkshire day delights such as pie and peas consumed at the historic Falcon Inn pub, and outside on the delightful village green.

After lunch, the route took the cars to Malham, Litton, Kettlewell and Gammersgill, before looping back to Ilkley. The day ended with successful completion of the run by all 60 cars back at the Ilkley Rugby Club, where drivers and passengers enjoyed a BBQ and live music into the evening from local band, Bullfrog Jones.

Commenting on the success of the first ever Ilkley Rally and Run, Gerard Simpson, Director of Ilkley’s Lessian Motors and organiser of the run said: “Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence in training hearing dogs to alert deaf people to everyday household sounds and danger signals. It’s a very worthy cause, so we are delighted to have already raised such an amount. Donations are still coming in from the day, so we hope to increase the initial sum raised!

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make the run a great success, including all the people who helped organise the event, and the participants who gave up their time and money for such a worthy cause. We are already planning next year’s event and looking forward to an even better Ilkley Rally and Run in August 2016.”

Drive safer, with winter tyres

snowy car road

To prepare your car for winter driving conditions, all drivers should consider using winter tyres. And that’s particularly so for motorists in our region, where the increased chance of heavy snow and ice can make driving conditions treacherous.

Unlike with normal tyres, winter tyres provide more effective grip on the road during cold and icy conditions – reducing the chance of an accident.

The rubber compound of winter tyres is different to normal tyres, being specifically formulated to work in temperatures below 7 degrees centigrade. With a normal tyre, if the temperature drops below 7 degrees the tyre loses its flexibility and level of grip.

In the cold, ice, and snow, winter tyres provide a level of grip that no normal tyre can match. A vehicle fitted with winter tyres will come to standstill on a snow-covered road (from a speed of 30mph) two full car lengths sooner than a car fitted with with normal tyres!

To get ready for winter, ask us about winter tyre options for your vehicle today.
