The second annual running of the Lessian Motors Ilkley Rally and Run raised a record amount for its chosen beneficiary, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

On the day, participants drove their vintage, classic, and performance cars over 100 miles of the Yorkshire Dales’ most remote and challenging roads. Along with a small entry fee and the sale of food and drink, the event raised over £1,200 for charity.

Commenting on the success of the second Ilkley Rally and Run, Gerard Simpson, Director of Ilkley’s Lessian Motors and organiser of the run said: “Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence in training hearing dogs to alert deaf people to everyday household sounds and danger signals.

“It’s a very worthy cause, so we are delighted to have already raised such an amount. I would like to thank everyone who helped make the run a great success, including all the people who helped organise the event, and the participants who gave up their time and money for such a worthy cause. We are already planning next year’s event and looking forward to an even better Ilkley Rally and Run in summer 2017.”

1 Ilkley Rugby Club

Raising funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity, over 90 cars turned out for last Sunday’s Ilkley Rally and Run, organised by Lessian Motors of Ilkley.

On the day, participants drove their vintage, classic, and performance cars over 100 miles of the Yorkshire Dales’ most remote and challenging roads – raising over £1,200 for charity.

Starting at 9.30 am, participants gathered at Ilkley Rugby club to sign-on and receive their route instructions. Navigating their way to Kettlewell, where a much needed refuel for the drivers and passengers saw traditional Yorkshire food consumed at the historic Blue Bell Inn.

After lunch, the route looped back to Ilkley via Hawes and Malham. The day ended with successful completion of the run by all the cars entered, returning to the Ilkley Rugby Club, where drivers and passengers enjoyed a BBQ and live music into the early evening from local bands Bullfrog Jones, Don O’Conner Band and Valkyrie.

Commenting on the success of the Rally and Run, Gerard Simpson, Director of Ilkley’s Lessian Motors and organiser of the run said: “Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence in training hearing dogs to alert deaf people to everyday household sounds and danger signals. It’s a very worthy cause, so we are delighted to have raised such a great amount. Donations are still coming in from the day, so we hope to increase the initial sum raised!

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make the run a great success, including all the people who helped organise the event, and the participants who gave up their time and money for such a worthy cause. With the excellent feedback we’ve had from the drivers this year, we’re really looking forward to next year’s Ilkley Rally and Run.”

Historic rally victory for Lessian Motors

Saturday 26th September saw Lessian Motors of Ilkley contest round 8 of the BTRDA Rally Series, the Trackrod Forest Stages Rally.

Consisting of 45 miles of very fast and loose gravel stages set within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, Lessian Motors, joint sponsor and provider of car service & preparation, had entered their 2.0 litre Ford Escort RS2000 MkII rally car to run in the highly competitive H2 Historic rally car class, with the car being freshly rebuilt to run in the class for the very first time.

In perfect driving conditions, the rally attracted over 180 rally crews to battle it out in the prime condition gravel tracks north of the picturesque market town of Pickering. After competing over the first 4 stages of the rally, the Lessian Motors/GPM Rally Team was placed second in class, an astonishing position for the crew and car, considering it was their first time out in the H2 category, and were up against some very experienced rally crews. By the end of the last stage, the car’s driver, Graeme Powell of PR & Marketing company GPM, had clawed his way up to first in class, winning by a margin of just over 6 seconds from the second placed car.

“To be honest, I didn’t know where we’d end up in this new class, the playing field is more even in this category with cars more closely matched in handling and performance, and it was the first time we’d competed in it,” said Graeme. “This event was run at a very fast pace and was tough, we’d seen quite a few cars crash out or broken down in the stages. To not only finish the rally, but also achieve first in class was a result I’m very proud. It’s a fitting reward for all the hours that go into the meticulous preparation of the car by Lessian Motors, who also service car on events – a real reflection of their professionalism and commitment.”

Prestigious restoration success

Ilkley’s vehicle servicing, MOT and specialist car restoration garage, Lessian Motors, is celebrating after a classic Porsche 911 they played a role in restoring was entered for sale at the prestigious Bonhams auction house, which took place last week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The rare 1969 Porsche 911T was purchased by David Graves Specialist Cars of Ilkley in 2011, but required a full strip down and rebuild. With every part of the classic supercar being renovated or replaced during its restoration, David Graves commented: “We chose Lessian Motors to paint the newly restored car bodywork because of their expertise and reputation in classic car restoration. When we acquired the car it was white – not the original colour, so we decided to return the vehicle to its original ‘Blood Orange’ factory colour.”

The car was spray painted to exacting standards by Lessian Motors, using their specialist ‘low bake’ paint oven and using period-correct ’68 Line’ Glasurit paint formulations, again, supplied by Lessian Motors. After painting, Lessian engineers also refitted the car’s major mechanical parts such as suspension, engine and gearbox, before returning it to David Graves Specialist Cars to complete the restoration task.

So exacting were the standards of the restoration that the vehicle was awarded the prestigious ‘Certificate of Authenticity’ by Porsche prior to its sale – confirming that it was restored to the factory’s own high standards, and adding further to the car’s value.

After the car’s sale at Bonhams auction, David enthused, “I am over the moon at the quality and attention to detail the Lessian Motors team delivered on this project. I can’t praise the standard of their craftsmanship high enough. The garage is a gem of an asset for anyone living in or around Ilkey who need to find a quality vehicle servicing or car bodywork and painting provider.”

Riponian 2013

Apart from offering a full range of competitively priced, local servicing and repair work for all marques of vehicles, we also prepare a Ford Escort MkII RS2000 to run in selected UK wide rally events.

Contesting our first rally of the new season recently, the Riponian Stages event was a resounding success for the Lessian Motors Rally Team. Consisting of 12 forest stages in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, along with our rally team PR & marketing partner, GPM, we managed to complete the treacherous snow and ice covered stages to finish 3rd in class.

“The opening rally of the season was a real challenge, with eight out of the ten forest stages covered in sheet ice and snow.” said Graeme Powell, GPM’s director. “I’m very pleased with this opening result, it’s due in no small part to the technical knowledge, experience and many of hours of work that has gone into the preparation of the car by the Lessian Motors team.”

Lessian Motors Rally Car

When it comes to winning rallies, the adage of ‘To finish first, you must first finish’ was in clear evidence last weekend, when the Lessian Motors/GPM Rally Team took part in the Malton Forest Rally.

Prepared and maintained by Lessian Motors, the Lessian sponsored Ford Escort MkII RS2000 proved its stamina and reliability over the rally’s unusually rough, deeply routed and slippery North Yorkshire Moors forest tracks.

Testament to the high-level of technical knowledge and experience of Lessian’s engineers, the car managed to complete all 6 rally stages, while over 30 out of the 74 cars competing broke down in the tough conditions.

Whether taking part in a rally, or simply driving your car for pleasure or business,  you can be assured that Lessian Motors’ full range of competitively priced local servicing and repair work will ensure your vehicle lasts the distance!
